Product reviewed: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Adult Salmon with Wholesome Grains Dry Dog Food
Reviewed package: 24-lb bag
Market reviewed: United States
Last fact-checked: September 24, 2026
Quick Verdict
Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Adult Salmon with Wholesome Grains is a high-protein, grain-inclusive dry food designed for large adult dogs.
The current U.S. formula guarantees at least 32% crude protein and 14% crude fat and provides approximately 388 kcal per cup.
Its first three ingredients are deboned salmon, salmon meal and chicken meal, followed by oatmeal, barley, potatoes and brown rice.
The formula also guarantees EPA, omega-3 fatty acids, taurine, L-carnitine, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. These additions fit the product's large-breed positioning, particularly its emphasis on muscle condition and joint mobility.
Blue Buffalo also benefits from substantial manufacturer infrastructure. The company says its foods are developed using on-staff veterinarians and PhD-level animal nutritionists and undergo a six-stage quality-control program.
There are limitations. The exact recipe is formulated to meet AAFCO adult-maintenance profiles rather than carrying an AAFCO animal-feeding-test adequacy statement. Blue Buffalo also has a historical recall record, although there is no active Blue Buffalo recall as of our September 2026 review and this exact Salmon with Wholesome Grains formula was not identified in those historical events.
Another important detail is that this is not a fish-only food. Despite salmon being prominently featured, the recipe also contains chicken meal, dried chicken and chicken fat.
Overall, this is one of the stronger Blue Buffalo formulas Dog Food Scout has reviewed so far: high in protein, grain-inclusive, rich in marine-derived ingredients, and backed by comparatively strong manufacturer expertise and quality controls.

What Is Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Salmon?
This is Blue Buffalo's large-breed version of its Wilderness Salmon with Wholesome Grains dry food.
It should not be confused with:
- the regular Adult Salmon with Wholesome Grains recipe;
- Wilderness Grain-Free Salmon;
- Wilderness Large Breed Grain-Free Salmon; or
- Wilderness Senior Salmon.
Those are separate products with different nutritional profiles.
The large-breed recipe reviewed here has been formulated with a slightly different calorie and mineral profile and higher guaranteed levels of glucosamine and chondroitin than the regular adult Salmon with Grains formula.
Does “Large Breed” Mean a Different AAFCO Standard?
AAFCO has specific considerations for the growth of large-size puppies, but healthy adult large-breed dogs fall under the normal adult maintenance category.
That means this food's official nutritional adequacy statement is adult maintenance.
The large-breed positioning instead comes from how Blue Buffalo has designed the complete recipe, including calorie density, mineral levels, feeding recommendations and added ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin and L-carnitine.
Nutritional Adequacy
Official product statement Blue Buffalo states that Wilderness Nature's Evolutionary Diet with Salmon and LifeSource Bits for Large Breed Adult Dogs is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.
That makes it a complete and balanced diet for adult maintenance when appropriately fed.
Formulated vs. feeding-tested
This exact product's nutritional adequacy statement uses the formulated to meet route.
It does not state that this specific recipe's complete-and-balanced status was substantiated through an AAFCO animal feeding test.
Blue Buffalo says its formulas undergo feeding studies, digestibility evaluation and nutrient analyses during product development.
That manufacturer-level testing is useful evidence, but it should not be confused with an AAFCO feeding-test adequacy statement for this exact recipe.
Guaranteed Analysis
| Nutrient | Guaranteed amount |
|---|---|
| Crude protein | 32.0% minimum |
| Crude fat | 14.0% minimum |
| Crude fiber | 6.0% maximum |
| Moisture | 10.0% maximum |
| EPA | 0.10% minimum |
| Calcium | 1.0% minimum |
| Phosphorus | 0.75% minimum |
| Taurine | 0.10% minimum |
| Omega-3 fatty acids | 1.0% minimum |
| Omega-6 fatty acids | 2.5% minimum |
| L-Carnitine | 100 mg/kg minimum |
| Glucosamine | 700 mg/kg minimum |
| Chondroitin sulfate | 550 mg/kg minimum |
These figures are guarantees rather than exact laboratory averages.
For example, 32% crude protein means the food contains at least that amount, not that every bag contains exactly 32%.
Dry-Matter Analysis
With a maximum moisture guarantee of 10%:
Dry matter = 100 − 10 = 90%
Protein
32 ÷ 90 × 100 = approximately 35.6% minimum protein on a dry-matter basis
Fat
14 ÷ 90 × 100 = approximately 15.6% minimum fat on a dry-matter basis
Crude fiber
6 ÷ 90 × 100 = approximately 6.7% maximum crude fiber on a dry-matter basis
These are Dog Food Scout calculations based on guaranteed values, not exact average laboratory measurements.
Calorie Content
Blue Buffalo reports approximately:
3,590 kcal/kg
or
388 kcal per 8-fl-oz cup.
That is a moderately energy-dense dry food.
Large dogs can consume substantial amounts of food each day, so accurately measuring portions is still important.
An active 90-pound dog may require much more energy than a sedentary 90-pound dog of the same breed. The feeding guide should therefore be treated as a starting point.
Ingredient Analysis
The current U.S. ingredient list begins:
Deboned salmon, salmon meal, chicken meal, oatmeal, barley, potatoes, brown rice, dried chicken, dried tomato pomace and natural flavor.
The recipe also contains chicken fat, flaxseed, powdered cellulose, fish oil, alfalfa, chicory root, taurine, L-carnitine, glucosamine, chondroitin, blueberries, cranberries and supplemental vitamins and minerals.
Deboned salmon
Deboned salmon is the first ingredient.
It contributes animal protein and marine fatty acids.
Like other fresh meats and fish, salmon contains substantial natural moisture, so first place on the ingredient list does not mean salmon alone provides most of the food's total protein.
Salmon meal
Salmon meal is the second ingredient.
Because much of its water has already been removed, it provides a concentrated source of fish protein and nutrients.
Having both fresh salmon and salmon meal among the first two ingredients is a meaningful feature of this formula.
Chicken meal
Chicken meal is the third ingredient and provides another concentrated animal-protein source.
This is important for owners who assume the product is chicken-free because “Salmon” appears prominently on the front of the bag.
Is This a Chicken-Free Salmon Food?
Despite the prominent salmon branding, the current recipe contains:
- chicken meal;
- dried chicken; and
- chicken fat.
Dogs that medically need to avoid chicken should therefore not be assumed to be suitable candidates for this formula.
Always evaluate the full ingredient panel rather than relying only on the protein named on the front of the bag.
Oatmeal, barley and brown rice
This is a grain-inclusive formula.
Oats, barley and brown rice provide carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
Dog Food Scout does not regard appropriate grains as inherently inferior ingredients.
Potatoes
Potatoes contribute carbohydrate, helping provide energy and kibble structure.
They appear after the principal animal proteins and two grain ingredients.
Dried tomato pomace and powdered cellulose
These primarily contribute dietary fiber.
That helps explain the relatively high 6% maximum crude-fiber guarantee.
Chicken fat
Chicken fat contributes concentrated energy and fatty acids.
It is preserved with mixed tocopherols rather than BHA.
Flaxseed
Flaxseed contributes fiber and alpha-linolenic acid, a plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid.
Fish oil and EPA
Fish oil contributes marine omega-3 fatty acids.
Unlike many foods that merely mention fish oil in the ingredient list, Blue Buffalo guarantees a minimum 0.10% EPA in this recipe.
The product also guarantees at least 1.0% total omega-3 fatty acids.
Those are useful quantitative disclosures.
Large-Breed Joint Support
Blue Buffalo guarantees:
Glucosamine: 700 mg/kg minimum
Chondroitin sulfate: 550 mg/kg minimum
These compounds are commonly included in foods and supplements marketed for joint support.
Large dogs place substantial mechanical loads on their joints, so their inclusion makes sense within the product's positioning.
However, Dog Food Scout does not assume the amount supplied by a normal serving of kibble is therapeutically equivalent to a veterinarian-selected joint supplement or medication.
L-Carnitine
The food guarantees at least 100 mg/kg of L-carnitine.
L-carnitine participates in fatty-acid metabolism and is frequently included in foods designed around body condition and lean-muscle maintenance.
Its presence should not be interpreted as meaning the food automatically causes weight loss.
Calcium and Phosphorus
The formula guarantees:
Calcium: 1.0% minimum
Phosphorus: 0.75% minimum
These are minimum guarantees, so Dog Food Scout does not calculate an exact calcium-to-phosphorus ratio from those two numbers and present it as laboratory fact.
For healthy adult large-breed dogs, the more important regulatory point is that the finished food is formulated to satisfy the AAFCO adult-maintenance nutrient profile.
LifeSource Bits
Like many Blue Buffalo dry foods, this recipe contains the company's LifeSource Bits.
Blue Buffalo describes them as a separate mixture of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals selected by veterinarians and animal nutritionists.
The company says they are cold-formed to reduce heat exposure to certain heat-sensitive nutrients.
Dog Food Scout treats the ingredient and processing description as a manufacturer-documented feature.
Broader claims concerning immune support should not be interpreted as proof that the food prevents disease.
No Corn, Wheat or Soy
Blue Buffalo states that the current formula contains:
- no corn;
- no wheat;
- no soy;
- no chicken or poultry by-product meals;
- no artificial flavors; and
- no artificial preservatives.
These characteristics may appeal to some shoppers.
Dog Food Scout does not, however, consider the absence of corn, wheat, soy or properly defined by-product meals automatic evidence that a food is nutritionally superior.
Why the Grains Matter
Blue Buffalo historically offered many Wilderness recipes as grain-free foods.
The company now also offers Wilderness formulas containing oats, barley and brown rice.
For this large-breed Salmon recipe, the primary plant ingredients are conventional grains rather than peas, chickpeas or lentils high in the ingredient list.
That may appeal to owners who want the high-protein Wilderness positioning without choosing a grain-free formula.
Manufacturer Nutrition Expertise
Blue Buffalo states that its own recipes are developed using on-staff veterinarians and PhD-level animal nutritionists.
The company also says new recipes undergo feeding studies, digestibility evaluation and nutrient analysis, with testing managed and monitored by veterinarians.
That is a meaningful strength under Dog Food Scout's manufacturer-expertise criteria.
Blue Buffalo does not provide the same degree of public, formula-specific information about individual nutrition professionals that some veterinary-focused manufacturers provide, so the category does not receive an automatic perfect score.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
Blue Buffalo reports two company manufacturing facilities:
- Joplin, Missouri; and
- Richmond, Indiana.
The company also uses U.S. manufacturing partners that produce foods according to Blue Buffalo's recipes and specifications.
Dog Food Scout therefore does not assume that every bag of every Blue Buffalo recipe is necessarily produced in a company-owned facility.
Blue Buffalo's six-point quality-control system
Blue Buffalo describes the following process:
- Source checks: ingredient suppliers and their programs are evaluated.
- Ingredient testing: incoming materials are checked before entering manufacturing.
- Batch monitoring: ingredient use and formula accuracy are tracked.
- In-process analysis: samples are collected and equipment cleanliness is monitored.
- Packaging inspection: metal detectors or X-rays are used, and packaging integrity and net weight are checked.
- Finished-product assessment: final products undergo formal review, including on-site or third-party laboratory testing.
These processes are manufacturer-reported, but the level of public detail earns meaningful quality-control credit.
Recall and Safety History
Blue Buffalo currently states that it has no active pet-food or treat recalls in 2026.
Dog Food Scout did not identify a current recall for this exact Wilderness Large Breed Salmon with Wholesome Grains formula.
The company does have a historical recall record.
2017 BLUE Wilderness wet-food recall
In March 2017, Blue Buffalo voluntarily recalled one production lot of BLUE Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner wet dog food because of potentially elevated levels of naturally occurring beef thyroid hormones.
FDA later marked that recall completed and terminated.
The recall involved a wet red-meat recipe, not this Salmon with Wholesome Grains dry food.
2016 Life Protection mold recall
Blue Buffalo also recalled a limited production batch of Life Protection Formula Fish & Sweet Potato dry dog food in 2016 because excessive moisture created the possibility of mold growth.
That was a separate product line and formula.
2010 vitamin D recall
In 2010, Blue Buffalo recalled specific lots of several dry foods because of potentially excessive vitamin D.
One of the affected products was BLUE Wilderness Chicken, along with selected Basics Salmon and Life Protection Large Breed Adult Chicken foods.
The present Wilderness Large Breed Salmon with Wholesome Grains formula is a different product and was introduced long after those historical lots.
A historical recall involving another recipe does not prove that a current bag of food is unsafe.
At the same time, meaningful brand-level safety events belong in a transparent review.
We therefore include them in the manufacturer safety score without describing this exact food as recalled when it was not.

Feeding Guide
Blue Buffalo currently gives the following starting recommendations for the large-breed formula:
| Dog weight | Suggested daily amount |
|---|---|
| 50–70 lb | 3 to 3 3/4 cups |
| 71–100 lb | 3 3/4 to 5 cups |
| Over 100 lb | 5 cups plus approximately 1/2 cup for each additional 20 lb |
Blue Buffalo recommends two meals per day for medium and large dogs.
Actual calorie requirements vary according to activity, neuter status, age, body condition, environment and individual metabolism.
The feeding chart should therefore be treated as a starting point.
Transitioning to Blue Buffalo Wilderness
Blue Buffalo recommends gradually transitioning over approximately 14 days.
Begin with roughly 25% of the new food, then progressively increase the proportion while reducing the previous diet.
A gradual transition can help reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Dog Food Scout Has Not Personally Tested This Formula
Dog Food Scout has not purchased, opened, measured or fed this exact food to a dog.
We therefore do not claim first-hand knowledge of:
- kibble size;
- smell;
- texture;
- bag durability;
- palatability;
- digestive tolerance;
- stool changes;
- coat changes;
- mobility changes; or
- long-term feeding results.

Price and Value
The current formula is available in 24- and 28-lb bags.
Larger packages can make sense for large dogs because their daily food consumption is substantially higher than that of small breeds.
Value should ideally be compared using more than bag price alone. Relevant factors include:
- package weight;
- calories per kilogram;
- daily feeding requirement;
- cost per 1,000 calories; and
- the amount of food the individual dog actually needs.
Dog Food Scout does not manually display Amazon pricing because prices and availability can change frequently.

Evidence Confidence: High
Evidence confidence is high because Blue Buffalo provides product-specific ingredients, calorie data, a detailed guaranteed analysis, AAFCO adequacy information and feeding recommendations.
The formula is especially transparent regarding EPA, omega fatty acids, taurine, L-carnitine, glucosamine and chondroitin.
Blue Buffalo also publicly documents its formulation team and quality-control program.
Confidence is not maximum because Dog Food Scout has not independently laboratory-tested or fed the product, and several broader health-benefit statements remain manufacturer claims.
Dog Food Scout Final Assessment
Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Salmon with Wholesome Grains is one of the stronger Blue Buffalo dry foods we have reviewed.
Its first two ingredients are salmon and salmon meal, it guarantees a high protein level, and it provides unusually useful quantitative information for EPA, omega-3 fatty acids, taurine, L-carnitine, glucosamine and chondroitin.
Its use of oatmeal, barley and brown rice also provides a grain-inclusive alternative for owners who like the high-protein Wilderness product line but do not specifically want a grain-free food.
The formula is not perfect. Its AAFCO adequacy is based on formulation rather than a feeding-test statement, and the prominent salmon branding may lead some consumers to incorrectly assume that the product is chicken-free.
It is not. Chicken meal, dried chicken and chicken fat are all part of the current recipe.
Blue Buffalo's historical recall record also deserves disclosure, although the company currently reports no active recall and Dog Food Scout found no recall involving this exact formula.
Taken as a whole, however, the combination of animal-protein concentration, grain-inclusive carbohydrates, marine fatty-acid guarantees, joint-oriented nutrients, qualified manufacturer expertise and transparent quality controls makes this a strong large-breed adult formula on paper.
Bottom line: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Salmon with Wholesome Grains is a high-protein, salmon-forward, grain-inclusive adult food with strong omega-3 and joint-support nutrient disclosure. It is a credible option for healthy large adult dogs that tolerate both fish and chicken, although feeding-test substantiation for the exact recipe would strengthen its evidence profile further.
